Now there are a lot of choices you have when it comes to FTP software, but the question is: which one is the best for you? Here are some of the top ones we recommend.

1. Cyberduck

Cyberduck is an FTP client designed for both Windows and iOS. It’s a free program that offers support for FTP, SFTP, and WebDAV.

One thing that many like about Cyberduck is that it is an open source software. This way, all the functionalities are transparent through its code. You won’t have to worry about dealing with a malicious piece of software.

The most appealing part of Cyberduck is that it connects to some of the major cloud storage services. This includes Amazon S3, Google Drive, OneDrive by Microsoft, and Dropbox. This makes working with multiple platforms easy.

That’s because you don’t have to manage multiple browser windows and apps. This is especially helpful if you work in a team work environment and use various file depositories.

2. FileZilla

For many WordPress users, Filezilla is the best FTP client. It’s a free open source software that works for all the major operating systems. It supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP.

While it looks simple, that’s part of what makes it such an attractive client. The software is easy to use and understand. This is good as some of the premium clients make things more complicated than needed.

There are various features that really make a difference. These include the ability to transfer queues, search remote files, and use filters to find what you need.

On top of that, the transfer speeds are among the fastest of the free FTP clients. That is why some dub this the best FTP client if you are on a budget.

3. CuteFTP

CuteFTP is another software that many see as the best FTP client. It is important to note that while CuteFTP is available for iOS and Windows, the advanced features the software has are only available for Windows.

That said, it has many features that other FTP clients lack. While it is a premium client, they do offer a 30-day trial. This way, you can make a fair decision on whether the premium pricing is of value to you or not.

One of the features that makes CuteFTP stand out is a scheduled transfer. This is a helpful option if you are used to uploading new content to your WordPress site and want the process to be hand off.

It also has a feature called TappIn. This time-saving tool allows you to connect between your desktop and mobile devices. There’s no need to install another third party software for this functionality.

4. FireFTP

FireFTP is one of the unique FTP clients on the list. That’s because it’s actually an add-on to Firefox rather than an application.

To use this best FTP client, all you do is open the tools menu in Firefox. This will pull up a two-column directory interface to transfer your files to your server. The interface is very well designed. Despite it being an add-on and not an application, FireFTP is quite fast.

This might be the best FTP client for you if you’re a creative that’s constantly searching the web for inspiration. Once you find something you like, you can save it. Afterwards, you just quickly upload it to your server for later use.

That said, it lacks some of the advanced features you’d find in more developed free and premium FTP clients. Despite this absence, you can put your trust in this program.

5. Transmit

Transmit is a standout on this list because it is specifically designed for macOS users. Like Cyberduck, it connects to a wide variety of cloud services like Google Drive, OneDrive, Rackspace, Dropbox, and so much more.

You can easily manage files from various platforms. You just simply drag and drop the files you want to move around.

A big standout of the FTP client is the speed of transfers. One of the problems that some FTP clients suffer from is volatile transfer speeds.

Sometimes, the transfers are just way too slower than it should be. On the other hand, Transmit is very consistent and delivers top-notch speeds. This makes it an attractive option for individuals that deal with a lot of multimedia files.

6. WinSCP

WinSCP as the name states is an FTP client designed specifically for Windows users. It employs a two-column UI like many other FTP clients.

However, this choice really does feel a little too cluttered compared to some of the other clients. That said, it is quite easy to pick up. You’ll find yourself using it with no problems after a couple of hours.

It lacks some of the advanced features that come equipped in the premium FTP clients. It also falls behind in terms of transfer speeds. However, this FTP client is a solid choice and is another great free option for you to consider.

7. WS FTP Pro

WS FTP Pro is a tool that has been around for a very long time. The company Ipswitch has focused on developing it as a premium application. They’ve built mostly on security and advanced features. It is often seen as the best FTP client in many tech review sites.

WS FTP Pro targets enterprise users since the main focus is security. It also has some really strong features like automatic backups, file compression, post-transfer actions, scheduled transfers, and email notifications.

If you are working with servers on a regular basis for your profession, this is one of the best premium FTP clients in the market.

Final Word

These are the top FTP client choices for WordPress in 2018. There really isn’t one best FTP client. This is why it really boils down to what features you’re looking for, and whether or not you’re looking to invest in such a program. Ultimately, all of these choices are solid to attain various goals.

  1. Hey Mary

Interesting read but you may want to correct one of your options as it is no longer available ie FireFTP. Sadly it is n longer supported in the newer versions of Firefox.
